White House Won’t Say If Special Forces Will Leave Afghanistan Under Biden’s Withdrawal Plan

After President Biden formally announced his plan to withdraw from Afghanistan by September 11th, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked if special operations soldiers would remain in the country under the plan, which she declined to answer.

“I’m obviously not going to get into operational specifics from the podium,” Psaki said when asked if the removal of combat troops by September 11th will include withdrawing Special Forces.

“I will say that we may — we will have what is needed to secure a diplomatic presence,” Psaki added. “And those assessments will be made over the coming months and obviously led by the Defense Department and State Department in coordination.”

Pentagon Announces $125 Million in Military Aid for Ukraine

On Monday, the Pentagon announced a $125 million military aid package for Ukraine. The $125 million package includes two armed Mark VI patrol boats, giving Ukraine a total of eight such vessels provided by the US.

The Pentagon said the package also includes “capabilities to enhance the lethality, command and control, and situational awareness of Ukraine’s forces.” This means additional counter-artillery radars, other tactical equipment, continued support for satellite systems, and some medical equipment.

Stock Exchange to Delist Chinese Firms to Comply With Executive Order


The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced on Thursday that it will delist three Chinese firms to comply with an executive order issued by President Trump in November. The order banned US investment in Chinese companies that the US government claims are connected to China’s military.

According to a statement released by the NYSE, China Mobile Ltd., China Telecom Corp Ltd., China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd., will be suspended from trading between January 7th and 11th, and proceedings to fully delist the firms have begun. President Trump’s order becomes effective on the 11th.

US Closing Last Two Consulates in Russia


The Trump administration informed Congress of its plans to close the last two US consulates in Russia, leaving the US embassy in Moscow as the only US diplomatic mission in the country.

The State Department sent a letter to congressional leaders on December 10th that said the US is permanently closing its consulate in Vladivostok, and temporarily halting operations at the consulate in Yekaterinburg.

According to the letter, the US is shuttering the consulates due to caps set by Moscow on the number of diplomats allowed in the country. In 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin set new limits on the number of US diplomatic employees in response to US sanctions.
