US Government Spying: Constructing a 'Turnkey Totalitarian State'?

The Washington Post reports that the ranking minority member of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence seems not too concerned about the United States government collecting information about our phone conversations:
Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, said, “This is nothing particularly new.... Every member of the United States Senate has been advised of this.”

He added: “It is simply what we call metadata that is never utilized by any government agency” unless an agency goes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judges for further review of the information.

Smoke Begins to Clear in Turkey

Turkey is fascinating and confusing. What is happening? A protest over a new shopping mall turns into the spark of a revolution? Is Taksim Square the new Tahrir Square?

As ever it is complicated and there are many lines and strains and competing interest groups. However the smoke is starting to clear a bit.

What if They Did it to Us?

Peter Hitchens writing at the Daily Mail poses a question that most supporters of interventionism -- be it of the liberal "humanitarian" variety or the imperialist variety -- never ask themselves: What if they did it to us?

In Hitchens scenario, the question is posed to his UK readership, but the scenario could very well be translated to the United States. What if a foreign power or a conspiracy of foreign powers cooked up a scenario to undermine and ultimately to overthrow our society and system of government.

What if the "Syria-scenario" were unfolded onto us?

An excerpt from his excellent article:

What Might Have Been...and What Is!

Writing in The Hill newspaper, Bernie Quigley points out what could have been, had RPI Chairman Ron Paul been successful in his 2012 run for the presidency. He also points out that the original Tea Party was a very different animal from what it became after being hacked by rapacious Republlican politicos:

Orwell Reigns Over Raw Milk Trial

The trial of Vernon Hershberger for the crime of selling healthy, unprocessed milk to informed and willing customers is sadly a damning commentary on the times in which we currently live.

This humble yet learned Amish farmer faces the ruin of his farm, his family, and jail time in a trial that highlights the utter depravity of the so-called authorities who claim the right to rule over the rest of us.

Over and over thugs raided the peaceful Hershberger's farm, destroying his property and terrorizing his ten children. His crime was selling a product that has been consumed from time immemorial and which thousands upon thousands of families (including this writer's) increasingly swear by as healthful and wholesome: unprocessed, fresh milk.

Senate Votes Unanimously Toward War Against Iran

Today the US Senate voted unanimously in favor of a Lindsey Graham resolution, S.Res.65, which "[s]trongly support(s) the full implementation of United States and international sanctions on Iran and urg[es] the President to continue to strengthen enforcement of sanctions legislation."

The legislation, as expected from a Lindsey Graham product, is full of misstatements, historical revisionism, and war-drum-beating hyperbole. Particularly revolting is the distortion and lies about Iran's not being in compliance with IAEA nuclear safeguards requirements and the irony of Graham's using Iran's refusal to implement UN resolutions as evidence of its rogue status. Also deceptive is the sleight of hand claiming that Iran pursuing a "nuclear weapons capability" is the real violation, rather than an Iranian failure to uphold its agreed upon obligation to not actually divert fissile material to build a nuclear weapon. It is a unilateral lowering of the bar, which is in fact itself a US violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Another Lying Rice in the White House

Obama's UN Ambassador Susan Rice, one of the architects of the Left-neocon favorite regime change tool, the "humanitarian intervention," appears slated for a promotion to become the president's National Security Advisor.

Rice's neo-conservative interventionist colleagues on the Right are bound to make a stink about her nomination, as they see tactical political points to be made over her talk show appearances after the attack on the US facility in Benghazi. Her repeating of whitewashed talking points on television -- a standard practice among governments -- is the least of Rice's crimes.

RPI CEO Dr. Paul on the Drug War

Listen here to RPI Chairman Ron Paul's latest podcase with Charles Goyette on one of the most fundamental foreign policy and civil liberties issues of our time: the war on drugs. Billions of dollars spent, people put in prison, US interventionism abroad -- the war on drugs is big business. And it is destroying our economy and our country.

RPI Advisor WIlkerson: Syria Evidence 'Pretty Flaky'

Ron Paul Institute Advisor Col. Lawrence Wilkerson appeared on the Young Turks program late last week to reveal that the "varying degrees of confidence" with which Defense Secretary Hagel proclaimed that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons was in fact based on "really flaky" evidence, according to Wilkerson's sources in the intelligence community.

"There is no way I would say my red line had been crossed and start something serious in terms of US intervention based on this very flimsy evidence," he said.
