We were told by media outlet after media outlet that it was a pro-democracy movement made up of Syrians demanding more freedom and an end to one-party rule. The people were all with the revolution, we were told, which only reluctantly turned violent after Assad brutally suppressed the peaceful protests. Eighty years after the Twenty-First Amendment to the United States Constitution ended the US government's prohibition on alcohol, Jeff Mosier reports in the Dallas Morning News that in elections Tuesday residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex cities of Arlington and Lewisville voted to legalize liquor stores in their cities. Mosier explains that the election results in these cities with respective populations of around 365,000 and 100,000 are part of a trend over the last decade of Texans voting to ease local legal restrictions related to alcohol. read on...
In keeping with recent practice of bombing the diplomatic facilities which oppose their struggle to overthrow the Syria government, the insurgents in Syria have hit the Vatican Embassy with a mortar shell today.
Targetting the Vatican embassy was likely no accident. As the US was on the verge of bombing Syria in late-August, the pope held a peace vigil at the Vatican attended by more than 100,000. As support for a US attack sagged among the American public and in Congress, this Vatican effort to head off a US war on behalf of the anti-Assad fighters was certainly of great significance. Saudi Arabia's recent North Korea-like cry for US attention -- announcing it was downgrading ties with its most important ally -- was all just drama for the camera. US Secretary of State John Kerry answered the plea of a weepy ally and again rushed to the Middle East to hold hands with his Saudi counterpart, Saud al Faisal. The ties have been mended, it seems, all is forgiven.
The Saudis were miffed that the hundreds of millions of dollars they spent to overthrow Syrian president Assad have not done the trick, and that in light of their failure the US had not taken up their fight in a more assertive manner. Just as the mainstream press is reporting -- in astonishment -- that the Syrian government has actually abided by its unilaterally agreed upon pledge to submit its strategic chemical weapon deterrent to destruction by the international community, the international media is reporting that the Israeli military has once again launched a military attack against Syrian territory.
This marks at least the fifth time in 2013 that the Israeli military has, in clear violation of international law, launched military attacks against neighboring Syria.
