RPI’s Adam Dick on the San Bernardino Killings, Mass Murders, Gun Control, Killer Cops, and US Militarism

Ron Paul Institute Senior Fellow Adam Dick was a guest this week of hosts Jason Burack and Eric Dubin on the always interesting Welcome to Dystopia podcast. The conversation begins with a discussion of the killings in San Bernardino, California last week and Dick’s Sunday article “‘No Gun for You!’: Obama’s ‘Soup Nazi’ Gun Control Proposal” that challenges United States President Barack Obama’s proposal that people on the No Fly List be barred from possessing guns. From there, the conversation turns to a variety of related topics.

Prayer Request for Ron Paul's Daughter

Lew Rockwell writes over at LRC:
Lew Rockwell writes at LRC: Ron and Carol’s oldest daughter, Lori Paul Pyeatt, is very sick with cancer. Please pray for her, and for the whole Paul Family.
I would second Lew's request and only add that as a long-time manager at the FREE Foundation, Lori is a valued colleague of ours at the Ron Paul Institute. I would also add on a personal note that Lori has become a big part of our daily life now that the Ron Paul Institute is in Clute, Texas. Her smile and great sense of humor brighten the mornings and we look forward to her quick return to the office.

After US Bombers Wipe Out Syrian Village, US Will Investigate Itself

Just days after what looks to have been a terror attack in San Bernardino, it is worth remembering that while thankfully rare in the US, such attacks are commonplace in the countries the US seeks to "liberate." Just yesterday, in the Syrian village of al-Khan, US bombers wiped out at least 36 civilians as they hit the center of the village.

Sometimes the Only Thing to Do is Nothing

When libertarians (or simply people with common sense) argue against proposals to solve a certain class of perceived problems (e.g., mass murders by odd-ball lunatics or crazed zealots) by imposing more stringent government controls, closer surveillance, and so forth, the proponents often reply: well, if you don't think my idea for government action will work, what do you propose instead to solve the problem? They are never happy when told that a better idea is to do nothing to solve it.

Searching for the ‘Lone Wolf’

The post incident analysis of events in San Bernardino is quite amazing to behold. Rather than admit that so-called terrorists might just be products of Washington’s follies overseas, the American media, government and chattering class all seem to be in search of new labels to explain away their inability to understand, anticipate and possibly even stop terrorist attacks.

Today’s spin is that we are now going through a phase of “lone wolf,” which is an insult to wolves everywhere, though one quickly discovers that “lone wolf” is somewhat interchangeable with another heavyweight academic concept called “leaderless resistance.” By alleging that there is a new type of enemy out there operating under a couple of serious sounding labels requiring adjustments in counter-terrorist procedures it is possible for those in charge to avoid any blame for innocent civilians being massacred.

Asset Forfeiture and Police Corruption

The Alabama Justice Project recently accused a state police department of systematic corruption. They claim around a dozen members of a police narcotics team planted drugs, weapons, and other evidence against black suspects. Moreover, it’s been alleged that the district attorney covered up these crimes.

The documents they published show that, beginning in 1996, the Dothan Police Department received its first complaints regarding false evidence. Complaints were filed by a group of officers in 1998. By late 1999, more than 12 officers had complaints lodged again them for planting evidence.

Dennis Kucinich: ‘Stay Tuned’ … ‘I’ll Probably Be Back in Elected Office’

Last year there was speculation that Dennis Kucinich would run for governor of Ohio, the state from which he served eight terms as a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives and in which he served previously as a state senator, Cleveland mayor, and Cleveland city council member. That governor run did not materialize. But, in a new interview with Truthdig Editor-In Chief Robert Scheer, Kucinich says he thinks he “will probably be back in elected office” in the future. “Stay tuned” is what Kucinich tells people wondering what he will do next.

Judge Andrew Napolitano: A ‘Farce’ to Say Mass Surveillance Ended; ‘Nothing Has Changed’

Judge Andrew Napolitano has followed up on his recent declaration at Fox News that the United States government can continue to conduct mass surveillance despite the expiration this week of PATRIOT Act Section 215 authority. Interview by Kennedy at Fox Business, Napolitano declares that, while “politicians who are in favor of destroying privacy would have you believe” that the mass surveillance program has ended, “the reality is there’s another section of the PATRIOT Act and there’s a President George W. Bush executive order, both still intact, both of which permit the collection of bulk metadata.”

Despite What You May Have Heard, Mass Surveillance Continues

Many news reports are heralding that the expiration this week of Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act authority has ended the United States government’s mass surveillance program. Meanwhile, in a Fox News interview, Judge Andrew Napolitano throws cold water on such claims.

Napolitano bluntly declares that the expiration of Section 215 authorization in no way prevents the US government from continuing its mass surveillance program. Napolitano explains that the National Security Agency (NSA) can continue to “gather phone calls, transcripts of phone calls, transcripts of emails, in real time” from all or nearly all Americans irrespective of the expiration of Section 215 authorization.

UAE Sends ‘Blackwater’ Colombian Mercenaries to Yemen

So file this one under “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” subcategory, “Everything.”
