Judge Napolitano: Hooray for Obama’s Clemency for Nonviolent Drug War Prisoners

Judge Andrew Napolitano, speaking on Fox News with Jenna Lee, explains why, “as someone who has harshly and repeatedly criticized the President,” he believes President Barack Obama “is doing the right thing” in granting clemency to potentially hundreds or thousands of people who have been incarcerated for nonviolent drug crimes.

Watch here Napolitano, an RPI Advisory Board member, explore the proposed clemency and explain why he believes many judges and police would support the clemency:

The exercise of clemency by Obama for some victims of the US government’s war on drugs appears likely to become the exercise of presidential pardon power on behalf of the most people since President Jimmy Carter issued on January 21, 1977—his first full day in office—a pardon that removed legal liability for many Vietnam War-era draft law violators.

While the Obama clemencies are a step in the right direction, ultimately justice demands ending the US government’s war on drugs and freeing all of the war’s prisoners.
