The exercise of clemency by Obama for some victims of the US government’s war on drugs appears likely to become the exercise of presidential pardon power on behalf of the most people since President Jimmy Carter issued on January 21, 1977—his first full day in office—a pardon that removed legal liability for many Vietnam War-era draft law violators.
While the Obama clemencies are a step in the right direction, ultimately justice demands ending the US government’s war on drugs and freeing all of the war’s prisoners.
