Obama Draws Red Lines As World Lurches Toward War

Obama Ukraine

President Obama delivered a brief press statement today in which he stated that rumors about Russian military activity in Crimea were "deeply disturbing" to the United States. He then drew dangerous red lines that threaten a serious international military conflict.

What is the backdrop to the president's warning?

Post-coup Kiev is not Ukraine -- even the media has noted that Ukraine is deeply divided -- and therefore it should have been expected that regions of Ukraine with a vast majority of Russians and Russian speakers would be less enthusiastic over the West's picks to head up the country.

Ukraine's Fractured Future

A month before violence ripped Ukraine apart, RPI contributor Christine Stone provided an in-depth analysis of Ukraine's precarious position, accurately forecasting the disaster that was to come.

Leave Ukraine Alone!

Last week Ukraine saw its worst violence since the break-up of the Soviet Union over 20 years ago. Protesters occupying the main square in the capitol city, Kiev, clashed with police leaving many protesters and police dead and many more wounded. It is an ongoing tragedy and it looks like there is no end in sight.

The current conflict stems from a divide between western Ukraine, which seeks a closer association with the European Union, and the eastern part of the country, which has closer historic ties to Russia.

EU Writes Ukraine's Eulogy

Anatolii Stepanov

The EU's so-called "crisis plan" for Ukraine is itself a recipe for catastrophe. It is a brokered plan by the wrong people, under extreme (western) outside pressure, and on behalf of a small group of backward looking and dangerous ideologues. The plan essentially leaves Ukraine ungovernable and inadvertently promotes a secessionist agenda.

The EU's really bad plan

The idea to return to the constitutional order of 2004 is pointless and truly bizarre. One of the key issues during the Orange Revolution was which institution should predominate - the presidency or parliament. Well, the Ukrainians have now tried both with the same result - failure. Why a parliamentary-centered system will work now is not explained. What is worrisome is the fact that Viktor Yanukovych has agreed to give away to parliament control over the police and security forces. Don't expect any investigation into extreme violence
committed by the rioters. But do expect a witch-hunt against the police and security forces!

The brokered deal calls for a "national unity government" within days. Will this include the Right Sector? How about those who used violence against the legally established constitutional regime? If this is the case, then it is akin to allowing arsonists to become firefighters. While Dmitro Yarosh's Right Sector controls the streets of Kiev national unity is an illusion.

In Ukraine, EU and US Interventionists Nearing the Civil War They Caused

Bbc

It always seems to start with the BBC. Months ago when the Ukrainian president patiently explained that his country’s economic and energy realities — which Vladimir Putin underscored — required that it stay close to Russia and not yet enter into a closer relationship with the EU, the BBC flooded Kiev with correspondents. These “independent” journalists began covering every angle of the crisis, or at least the angles that coincided with the view of pro-EU Ukrainian demonstrators and the BBC’s own, now thoroughly institutionalized, worship of the divinity known as the EU.

As one rule of thumb, any non-EU government that is dealing with domestic unrest ought to immediately close all BBC facilities in its country and issue no visas for BBC correspondents who want to enter the country and “cover” — a word that always means “support” — the demonstrations. The BBC — except for five minutes at the top and bottom of the hour — has long since ceased being a news organization. It is now better seen as a “campaign group,” the name the BBC itself uses for reckless, irresponsible, and violence-and-anarchy causing international groups like Amnesty International and other components of the human-rights mafia.

'Ukraine is in Revolutionary Situation'

9JKT 97251

The Ukrainian crisis didn’t appear to be bloodless, but the situation hasn’t gone that far to ruin the country. The head of state seems to be more agreeable from day to day, taking into consideration opposition’s requirements, but still the world is concerned with the situation and has been trying to offer its mediation to the crisis. The Voice of Russia talked to Daniel McAdams, Executive Director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, author of the article "Why Does Ukraine Seem So Much Like Syria?".

In his article Daniel McAdams says that Ukraine resembles Syria, not only from the point of violence outburst, but also as a reflection of the impact of world powers in the conflicts, especially that of the US.

Bashar Assad resisted for three years, Mr Yanukovich seems to be more agreeable so far. How do you think Yanukovich will act in the future?

I don’t think he will have much opportunity to act at all. I think his days as president are numbered. You see in Ukraine what I think you could call Orange Revolution part 2. The first Orange Revolution in 2004 only changed the government and as we know it was easily changed back when the people had the opportunity to exercise their vote again. So, what they needed was a real revolution to change the entire system rather than the government and that is what I think you see on the ground, that is what you see in writing today.

Ukraine: It’s Not About Europe vs Russia

Ukraine Chain

To discuss the Ukrainian crisis in terms of a choice between Europe and Russia is misleading for several reasons.

First, the European issue has been ruthlessly exploited by the Ukrainian opposition and its Western backers as an excuse for overthrowing the government illegally and by force. Opposition leaders have never distanced themselves from the most radical elements on the streets of Kiev, even though these include neo-Nazis.

On the contrary, they have done everything to use their violence as a bargaining chip in their battle with the government. Let us never forget that the majority of the 25 deaths on the night of 18 – 19 February were murders committed by the protesters:  9 policemen were shot dead or stabbed to death, while 3 members of the governing party and a journalist were also killed.

Washington Orchestrated Protests Are Destabilizing Ukraine

Ukrainian Fire

The protests in the western Ukraine are organized by the CIA, the US State Department, and by Washington  and EU-financed Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that work in conjunction with the CIA and State Department. The purpose of the protests is to overturn the decision by the independent government of Ukraine not to join the EU.

The US and EU were initially cooperating in the effort to destroy the independence of Ukraine and make it a subservient entity to the EU government in Brussels. For the EU government, the goal is to expand the EU. For Washington the purposes are to make Ukraine available for looting by US banks and corporations and to bring Ukraine into NATO so that Washington can gain more military bases on Russia’s frontier.

There are three countries in the world that are in the way of Washington’s hegemony over the world: Russia, China, and Iran. Each of these countries is targeted by Washington for overthrow or for their sovereignty to be degraded by propaganda and US military bases that leave the countries vulnerable to attack, thus coercing them into accepting Washington’s will.

The problem that has arisen between the US and EU with regard to Ukraine is that Europeans have realized that the takeover of Ukraine is a direct threat to Russia, which can cut Europe off from oil and natural gas, and if there is war completely destroy Europe. Consequently, the EU became willing to stop provoking the Ukraine protests.

Victoria Nuland Comes Clean with Dirty Language

Nuland Ukraineoppos

The leaked private phone conversation between senior US State Department official Victoria Nuland and the American ambassador to Ukraine – in which Nuland is heard to disparage the European Union with a vulgar expletive – comes as a welcome relief. It is a moment of clarity, in which the US government inadvertently comes clean on its hidden agenda.

All the elusive speculation about what Washington’s agenda in Ukraine is now laid to rest. Nuland’s own words make it clear that the US agenda is all about orchestrating regime change in Kiev. Needless to say, that constitutes an infringement of that country’s sovereignty and should now be a matter of applying sanctions under international law against the US.

It also undermines the political cause of protesters in Maidan Square. They are now seen, more than ever, as a Trojan Horse for external political interference in Ukraine. This is not a cause of patriotism, as we have been led to believe in the Western media, but rather more like grubby treachery to serve a foreign agenda.
