How I Survived for 3 Years as a Libertarian Cop

undefined

When I retired as a Detective from the NYPD I moved to Florida and decided to join a local sheriff’s office to work as a Deputy. I needed to make some money and it was the only job for which I was qualified. I was accepted and took the job.

From the start I wanted to be the ultimate Libertarian cop. I was not going to arrest anyone for drugs or victimless crimes and I was going to try my best to make as many quality arrests as possible. For a good part of those 3 years I was able to do my thing. I tried to fade into the background. I never brought up the fact that I was retired NYPD-though my colleagues probably knew from the constant stationhouse gossip. I tried to make myself invisible to my supervisors and only interacted with them when I had to do so. And in this sheriff’s office we only held roll call once every two weeks. Sometimes I didn’t see my supervisor for two weeks at a time. And that was great for me. I worked without a partner and basically had no one breathing down my neck. So yes, I was able to do my thing.

If I came across some drug user who had drugs on them I would have them dump the drugs into a ditch and ask them for their help by looking at my clipboard of wanted dangerous felons. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. But I got my fair share of arrests in this manner. And those same people who had helped me would come back to me on their own to try to ID other dangerous felons. I was also determined to investigate every call I received as if I was still a detective. I interviewed everyone I arrested. Oftentimes I would get confessions.

Why Gilligan’s Island May be the Answer to Police Brutality

undefined

I retired from the NYPD and moved to Florida like many NYC policemen and firemen do- there is no state income tax here and it doesn’t snow. I decided I needed a job so I worked for a local Sheriff’s office for three years.

Policemen always have their hands full when they deal with emotionally disturbed persons (EDP’s in NYPD parlance). It was no different in south Florida.

While working in Florida I had seen many incidents where an EDP was wrestled into handcuffs, pepper sprayed, or even shot with a taser. But I handled EDP’s much differently than the average cop. And, since I didn’t like to wear all that crap on my belt, I never wore a taser. So that wasn’t an option for me. I was, an continue to be unorthodox in my ways but I always looked to get the job done with as little force as necessary.

This particular true story started when I was in my training period after starting out in the sheriff’s office. My training officer, who hailed from New York, and I were dispatched as backup to a call of an emotionally disturbed woman who refused to be handcuffed and taken to the local mental health facility.

Understanding Motivation in Criminal, Terror, and Military Attacks

undefined

During Dr. Ron Paul’s 2012 Presidential campaign, as we were quietly sitting in a car, Dr. Paul suddenly asked me, “John, do detectives look for the motives of criminals?” I replied, “Well sir, the good ones certainly do. Knowledge of the motive can help prevent future crimes.” This very brief interaction stuck with me through the years. I knew Dr. Paul was right. Knowledge of motive was crucial to understanding the deterrence of criminal, terror, and military attacks. I came to understand that there was a real nexus between what I had done as a detective and what we should be doing as a country. Understanding motive.

Recently, the mainstream media has reported, and government sources have allegedly confirmed, that the Houthis in Yemen, supported by the Iranian regime, were the perpetrators of an attack on Aramco facilities in Saudi Arabia. The Houthis have been consistent in their insistence that they conducted the attack with ten drones. It is said that cruise missile debris could contradict their claim and possibly point to Iranian complicity. This is all from mainstream media reports as well as US intelligence. Media reports and US intelligence reports are not to be relied on as truth. We all know what occurred in Iraq with the claims that country possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction.

We must also take heed of Dr. Ron Paul’s statement that “Iraq had never attacked the United States.” According to President Trump the United States is now “locked and loaded” due to the recent attack. He may well walk back on these words and seek to impose sanctions on Iran (really just another act of war).
